“I'm Just Bad at Maths”: How to Help a Child With Maths Anxiety

“I'm just not a maths person.” It's one of the most common things I hear from students — and from their parents — when we first meet. It sounds like a fact about intelligence. It isn't. Maths anxiety is a stress response, not a measure of ability, and understanding the difference is the most useful thing a parent can do for a child who is struggling.

Research from the University of Cambridge, funded by the Nuffield Foundation, found that 77% of children with high maths anxiety are normal to high achievers on curriculum maths tests. These children are performing well below their real level — not because of any deficit in ability, but because anxiety is occupying the working memory that calculation needs. The problem is the fear, not the maths.

This guide covers what the research actually says about maths anxiety in children: what causes it, how to spot it, the phrases worth retiring, what genuinely helps at home, and when to seek proper assessment. It is written for parents, but the families I tutor across Oxford often share it with their children too — because understanding what is happening can itself reduce the shame that feeds the cycle.

What Maths Anxiety Actually Is

The working definition used by researchers, including the Cambridge Centre for Neuroscience in Education team, is straightforward: “a feeling of tension and anxiety that interferes with the manipulation of numbers and the solving of mathematical problems in ordinary life and academic situations.” Notice “ordinary life”: this is not just about exams. A child with maths anxiety may feel it when asked to calculate change, read a bus timetable, or help a younger sibling with sums.

Two things are worth separating clearly. First, maths anxiety is not the same as general test anxiety — they are related, but a 2012 study of 433 British secondary pupils (Devine, Fawcett, Szűcs & Dowker) found that when general test anxiety was controlled for statistically, maths anxiety still independently predicted worse maths performance. It is domain-specific: the fear is specifically of maths, not of being assessed in general.

Second — and this is the point worth repeating to a child who believes the story — maths anxiety is not the same as low mathematical ability. The Cambridge/Nuffield study of over 2,700 UK and Italian primary and secondary pupils found that 77% of those with high maths anxiety were performing at normal or above-normal levels on curriculum assessments. Anxiety is a brake on performance, not a ceiling on potential.

Why Maths Anxiety Hurts Performance: the Working-Memory Mechanism

Understanding the mechanism helps enormously — both for parents trying to support a child and for older students trying to make sense of why they “know the work” at home but go blank in a test. The explanation is cognitive, not moral.

Working memory is the mental workspace we use to hold and manipulate information in the moment — the space where arithmetic actually happens. It has limited capacity, governed by what researchers call the central executive: the supervisory component that co-ordinates attention. When a person becomes anxious, intrusive worry-thoughts — “I'm going to fail this”, “everyone will notice” — occupy working memory like a competing task, leaving fewer resources for the maths problem itself.

The foundational study here is Ashcraft & Kirk (2001), who showed that highly maths-anxious individuals made significantly more errors on a secondary memory task when solving maths problems — because the anxiety itself was behaving like a resource-demanding secondary task draining the same cognitive space. A 2005 paper by Beilock & Carr added an important twist: it is specifically students with high working-memory capacity who choke hardest under pressure, because they typically rely on working memory more and so have more to lose when anxiety raids it.

What this means in practice. A bright child with maths anxiety may perform well on homework (low stakes, comfortable environment, no time pressure) and poorly on tests (high stakes, time pressure, public setting) — not because they have learned different material in the two settings, but because anxiety consumes the working memory that tests demand. The child is not exaggerating or making excuses. The mechanism is real.

This is also why timed tests are particularly problematic for anxious students. Stanford researcher Jo Boaler has argued that timed maths testing is a precipitating experience for a significant proportion of children who develop maths anxiety, because speed pressure creates exactly the conditions — stress, time urgency — in which working memory is most compromised. Repeatedly “blanking” under time pressure entrenches the negative association with maths tasks.

How Common Is Maths Anxiety in Children?

More common than most people assume — and increasing. A UK study of 1,757 children in Years 4 to 7 found 11% had scores above moderate anxiety on a validated maths anxiety scale. Broader estimates from the Nuffield Foundation suggest up to 17% of the general population is maths anxious, though studies use different measurement tools and the figures are not directly comparable.

International data from PISA 2022gives a striking picture of the trend. Across OECD countries, the proportion of students who agreed or strongly agreed that they “get very nervous when doing mathematics problems” rose from 31% in 2012 to 39% in 2022 — a substantial shift in a decade. More than six in ten students expressed concerns about their ability to succeed in maths classes. Differences in the maths anxiety index across countries account for approximately 25% of the variation in maths performance internationally.

Girls are disproportionately affected. The Cambridge research and PISA data both confirm that girls report higher maths anxiety than boys from primary school onwards, and this gap is near-universal across countries — with the UK among those with the largest absolute gender gap. Importantly, in the Devine et al. study, girls' higher anxiety did not translate into lower actual maths performance on average, but it did translate into stronger career-avoidance: research published in 2023 found that maths anxiety directly predicted the maths-intensity of career choices for girls at secondary and university level, with gender effects on career choice mediated by anxiety rather than ability. This is one reason early intervention matters so much.

Signs to Look For — and What They Often Mean

The signs of maths anxiety can look quite different depending on age and personality. Some children become loud and avoidant; others go quiet and compliant but switch off internally. The table below maps common presentations to what is often going on underneath — and to the responses that help.

Physical symptoms are particularly worth noting, because they can be dismissed as “just nerves” when they are actually a consistent signal. If a child reliably complains of stomach aches or headaches before maths lessons or homework sessions — but not before other subjects — that pattern deserves attention. Similarly, a child who can solve problems in conversation at home but freezes completely in classroom conditions is showing the hallmark working-memory drain of maths anxiety, not a gap in knowledge.

The Parental Transmission Finding — and the Phrases Worth Retiring

This section is the most delicate in the guide, and I want to handle it carefully. The research finding is real and important — but it carries no blame. Parents who transmit maths anxiety do so inadvertently, and usually out of genuine effort to help.

The key study is Maloney, Ramirez, Gunderson, Levine & Beilock (2015), published in Psychological Science. It followed 438 children in first and second grade (ages approximately 6–8) and their primary caregivers over a full school year, measuring both maths anxiety and maths achievement at the start and end of the year. The finding was precise: children of maths-anxious parents learned significantly less maths over the year and had higher maths anxiety by the year's end — but only when those parents reported helping frequently with maths homework. When maths-anxious parents helped less often, children's achievement and anxiety were unrelated to their parents' level of anxiety.

The proposed mechanism is not that anxious parents teach maths incorrectly, but that they inadvertently communicate negative attitudes and model avoidance — signalling through tone, hesitation or frustration that maths is threatening. Children are exquisitely sensitive to adult emotional cues, and if the adult helping them appears stressed by maths, the child learns that maths is the kind of thing that stresses capable grown-ups.

Phrases worth quietly retiring:
  • “I was never any good at maths either.” — National Numeracy notes this is the maths equivalent of saying “I can't read” in front of your child. It normalises giving up.
  • “Some people just aren't maths people.” — Presents ability as fixed and innate. Research on fixed-ability framing consistently links it to reduced persistence.
  • “This is impossible, maths has changed since I was at school.” — Even if true, it models helplessness at the exact moment a child needs to see someone persist.
  • “Your brother/sister found this easy.” — Sibling comparison reliably raises anxiety and lowers self-esteem. It has no upside.

What does this mean practically? If you feel anxious about maths yourself, the most helpful thing is not to push through and help anyway, but to find a different source of support — whether that is an app, a video explainer, or a tutor. The Beilock study does not say “maths-anxious parents should abandon their children”: it says that the channel of frequent direct homework help, when the helping adult is themselves anxious, is the specific transmission route. Removing or replacing that channel protects the child without requiring the parent to overcome their own anxiety first.

Maths Anxiety vs Dyscalculia: Why the Distinction Matters

These two things are sometimes confused, and the confusion leads to inappropriate responses in both directions — unnecessary assessment on one hand, and missed diagnoses on the other.

Dyscalculiais a neurological learning difficulty — a domain-specific deficit in understanding numerical quantities and number sense, persistent regardless of emotional state. The British Dyslexia Association defines it as “a specific and persistent difficulty in understanding numbers which can lead to a diverse range of difficulties with mathematics… unexpected in relation to age, level of education and experience.” The BDA estimates it affects approximately 6% of the UK population, with a research range of 1.3–10.3% depending on diagnostic criteria.

Maths anxiety is primarily an emotional response — fear or stress triggered by maths situations. A child with maths anxiety alone may possess entirely normal number sense and mathematical knowledge, with performance impaired only by the emotional interference. A child with dyscalculia has a genuine processing difficulty, and that difficulty can, over time, generate secondary maths anxiety as a layer on top.

Key differences to watch for:

  • Dyscalculia features include difficulty naming, ordering and comparing quantities; persistent confusion about place value; difficulty with estimation; and trouble internalising basic number facts even with extensive practice. These difficulties are present regardless of the emotional context — a relaxed, one-to-one setting does not remove them.
  • Maths anxiety features include physical symptoms, avoidance, and a marked gap between low-stakes and high-stakes performance. These often improve noticeably in a calm, supportive setting — which can be a diagnostic signal in itself.

If you are unsure which is at play, the first step in the UK is a conversation with the school's SENCO (Special Educational Needs Coordinator), who can advise on school-based support and, if warranted, refer to an educational psychologist. Formal dyscalculia assessment must be carried out by an assessor qualified to Level 7 with AMBDA Dyscalculia — the BDA qualification specifically for dyscalculia. No GP referral is needed to commission this privately, and the BDA operates a Dyscalculia Referral Assessment Service to connect families with qualified assessors. Critically, a Level 7 qualification in dyslexia assessment alone is not considered sufficient for dyscalculia diagnosis.

What Actually Helps at Home: a Practical List

There is genuine evidence behind several home-based strategies — and some which sound plausible but are weaker than they look. Here is an honest list, drawing on the research covered in this guide.

Step 1

Remove time pressure from home practice

Timed drills at home compound anxiety without improving fluency significantly for an anxious child. Let your child work through problems at their own pace in home practice sessions. Speed can be developed later, once conceptual confidence is established. This directly reduces the working-memory drain that timed pressure creates.

Step 2

Try expressive writing before high-stakes tests

Ramirez & Beilock (2011) published a striking finding in Science: students who spent roughly 10 minutes writing freely about their feelings before a high-pressure maths test showed a 5% accuracy improvement, while controls showed a 12% drop — a 17-percentage-point differential. Encourage your child to jot down their worries before a test, not to suppress them. Getting the anxiety out of their head and onto paper genuinely frees up working memory.

Step 3

Use low-stakes retrieval practice, not passive review

Re-reading notes is one of the least effective revision strategies for anxious children — it feels safe but produces little learning and no confidence-building. Low-stakes self-testing (flashcards, practice questions done alone and checked after, not watched) builds both knowledge and confidence. A survey of over 1,400 students reported that 72% said retrieval practice made them less nervous for tests. Crucially, the low-stakes framing is essential: treat it as practice, not assessment.

Step 4

Use concrete objects before abstract symbols

The Concrete–Pictorial–Abstract (CPA) approach, recommended by the EEF's guidance on maths in Key Stages 2 and 3, builds understanding through physical objects before moving to diagrams and then symbols. For anxious children at home, this can mean counting actual objects, drawing pictures of problems, or using free apps that show visual representations. Abstract symbols (equations, fractions written formally) are where anxiety peaks; grounding them in something visible and tangible reduces that spike.

Step 5

Celebrate effort and strategy, not speed or natural ability

Praising a child for being 'quick' at maths sends the implicit message that slowness equals failure — exactly the wrong signal for an anxious child. Instead, praise the approach: 'I liked how you checked that', 'good idea to draw a diagram', 'you stuck at that even when it was hard'. The research on fixed-ability language and growth mindset framing is genuinely contested at the intervention level (a 2023 meta-analysis found that most mindset interventions produced negligible effects), but the underlying recommendation to avoid fixed-ability language is well-supported.

Step 6

Normalise mistakes and model persistence

Anxious children often believe that making a mistake in maths means they cannot do maths. Deliberately working through problems together and narrating your own uncertainty — 'I'm not sure about this step, let me think' — models that confusion is part of the process, not a verdict. The goal is to make errors feel like information rather than evidence of inadequacy.

Step 7

Protect sleep and physical wellbeing around tests

This sounds too simple to include, but it matters. Anxiety and poor sleep interact badly — a tired, under-rested child has reduced working-memory capacity before anxiety even enters the picture. In the days around tests or mock exams, a sensible bedtime and a decent breakfast are not trivial details; they are cognitive preparation.

What Makes Maths Anxiety Worse

Some triggers are obvious in hindsight; others are things well-meaning adults do without realising the effect. The research is fairly consistent about the main culprits.

    Public correction and humiliation

    Research consistently identifies being called out for a wrong answer in front of peers — or ridiculed by a teacher or adult at home — as a major precipitating incident. A single public negative experience can create a durable anxiety association, because the brain encodes repeated threat signals connected to a domain. More than half of those reporting maths anxiety recall it beginning with a specific episode of public correction.

    Timed tests without adequate preparation

    Repeatedly experiencing the blank-mind sensation under time pressure trains the association between maths and failure. This does not mean timed practice is always harmful — it means that introducing time pressure before a child has adequate fluency is counterproductive. Build fluency first, then gradually reduce time constraints.

    Sibling and peer comparison

    Comparing a child's maths performance unfavourably to a sibling's or classmate's is consistently associated with increased anxiety and reduced self-esteem. 'Your sister found this easy' has no upside and a clear downside: it adds shame to confusion.

    Classrooms or home environments that reward quick answers and treat slowness as inadequacy communicate that maths is about performance rather than thinking. This is particularly damaging for children who are methodical but accurate — they learn that their natural working style is wrong.

    Maths is more cumulative than almost any other subject. A child who misses or fails to consolidate a foundational concept — place value, fractions, algebra basics — carries that gap into every subsequent topic that builds on it. Each new topic then feels incomprehensible, confirming the belief that 'I can't do maths', when the real problem is a specific earlier gap. This is one of the strongest arguments for early, targeted intervention rather than waiting.

How One-to-One Tuition Breaks the Cycle

I am not going to oversell this — one-to-one tuition is not the only solution to maths anxiety, and for some children the strategies above will be enough. But there is a reason why the families I work with across Oxford and Kidlington consistently report that tuition shifts not just grades but confidence: the format of a private lesson directly counteracts the main triggers of maths anxiety.

Consider what anxiety most requires to take hold: an audience, time pressure, public comparison, and uncertainty about whether you know enough to handle what comes next. In a one-to-one lesson with a patient tutor, all four of those are removed. There is no audience. There is no competitive peer. There is no clock bearing down. And crucially, a diagnostic lesson identifies exactly which prior gaps are feeding the confusion — so the child stops facing material that is genuinely incomprehensible and starts working at the right level.

The EEF evidence on one-to-one tuition. The Education Endowment Foundation's Teaching and Learning Toolkit rates one-to-one tuition at an overall average of +5 months of additional progress, with evidence security rated Moderate across 123 qualifying studies. The EEF notes that effects in mathematics specifically are lower (+2 months) than in literacy (+6 months), though the private, low-stakes, diagnostic format of tuition addresses anxiety triggers that are not captured by aggregate subject-level data. Tuition is most effective when it is high-quality and aligned to classroom learning — which is why I always take a copy of what a student is currently covering in school before we start.

For children whose maths anxiety is connected to accumulated gaps — which in my experience describes the majority of the anxious students I meet at GCSE level — the gap-filling is at least as important as the emotional dimension. A child who has never been properly taught how fractions work will be anxious about fractions indefinitely, regardless of how much encouragement they receive. Secure knowledge is the foundation on which confidence builds.

What this looks like in practice: I start every new student with a free diagnostic lesson — an informal session, no test, no pressure — to map where the real gaps are. Then we work through those gaps systematically, at a pace that is just above comfortable, with lots of retrieval practice and no audience. For most students, the change in confidence is visible within a few weeks, well before the grades catch up. When to Seek Professional Help

For most children, the strategies in this guide — combined with a supportive home environment and, where appropriate, focused one-to-one support — will make a meaningful difference. But there are circumstances where a professional assessment is the right next step, and it is worth knowing what they look like.

  • Difficulties persist despite good support. If a child continues to struggle significantly with number concepts — not just tests — across school years despite adequate teaching and home support, an assessment for dyscalculia or other specific learning difficulties is warranted.
  • Anxiety is severe or generalising. If maths anxiety is causing vomiting, panic attacks, school refusal, or spreading into anxiety about school or learning more broadly, a referral is needed — either through the school SENCO to an educational psychologist, or via the GP to neurodevelopmental or CAMHS services.
  • The picture does not match ability elsewhere. A child who is fluent in reading, strong in verbal subjects, and articulate in reasoning — but cannot process basic number concepts even in calm, one-to-one settings — may have dyscalculia rather than, or as well as, anxiety. The distinction requires assessment, not guesswork.
  • The social and emotional impact is significant. If maths anxiety is affecting a child's willingness to engage in any maths-adjacent activity, causing real distress at home, or leading to avoidance of social situations involving numbers, it has moved beyond the scope of home strategies alone.

The UK pathway: start with the school SENCO, who can initiate school-based support and refer to an educational psychologist if needed. Parents can also commission an independent dyscalculia assessment directly — no GP referral is required — from a BDA-recognised assessor qualified to Level 7 with AMBDA Dyscalculia. The BDA operates a Referral Assessment Service to connect families with qualified assessors, and SASC (SpLD Assessment Standards Committee) publishes the assessor qualification standards.
