
If your child starts secondary school this September, Year 7 maths is probably the subject you're quietly watching. It's the one where the step up is most visible — new notation, new expectations, a homework app you've never heard of — and, less obviously, the one where research shows children genuinely can slip backwards after the move.
The good news: none of it is mysterious once you know what's coming. Year 7 follows a national curriculum whose content is published in full, the early tests are lower-stakes than they sound, and the things that actually help at home are simple, cheap and backed by evidence. (And if you've read about curriculum reform in the news — relax. The revised national curriculum won't be taught before September 2028, so this year's starters begin KS3 on the current, familiar one.)
This is the parent's guide I share with the Oxford families I tutor for 2026/27: what actually changes from primary maths, the topics your child will meet, what CATs and baseline tests are really for, why the “Year 7 dip” happens — and the five things worth doing at home.
What Changes from Primary to Secondary Maths
The move from one primary classroom to a secondary maths department changes everything around the maths before it changes the maths itself: a specialist teacher your child sees a few times a week, a class drawn from several primaries, homework set online, and — usually for the first time — a scientific calculator on the equipment list (schools publish their own kit lists, so check yours). The maths itself shifts in a handful of specific ways, all set out in the national curriculum:
- Negative numbers become formal. Year 6 only uses negatives “in context”; KS3 expects all four operations with positive and negative integers, decimals and fractions.
- Algebra becomes systematic. Primary algebra is simple formulae and missing-number problems; Year 7 introduces proper notation (ab, 3y, a²), collecting like terms, expanding brackets and solving linear equations.
- Order of operations goes everywhere. Explored with brackets in Year 6, it's applied throughout KS3 — including with powers and negatives.
- Fractions, decimals and percentages join up. KS3 expects fluent movement between all three, plus percentage change and simple interest problems.
- Genuinely new content arrives. Standard form, ruler-and-compass constructions, formal congruence and similarity, and Pythagoras' theorem (usually later in KS3).
Calculators are the quiet change parents miss. At primary they're deliberately held back until the very end of KS2; from Year 7, using one accurately — and knowing when not to reach for it — becomes a taught skill in its own right.
The Year 7 Maths Curriculum: Six Strands
The statutory KS3 programme of study organises everything your child will meet between Years 7 and 9 into six content strands. Here's each strand, the kind of topics a typical Year 7 covers, and what it's building towards:

Two caveats worth knowing. First, the national curriculum specifies KS3 as a whole, not year by year — so each school decides its own Year 7 sequence, and topic lists vary from school to school. Second, content is only half the story: running through all six strands are the aims of fluency, mathematical reasoning and problem solving — including multi-step and unfamiliar problems, which is where many Year 7s feel the stretch first.
You may also hear the word mastery. Many departments now teach through the mastery approach championed by the NCETM and the Maths Hubs network — whole-class teaching in small steps, depth before acceleration, fluency and reasoning developed together. Everything here feeds forward: the GCSE course normally begins in Year 10 (in some schools, Year 9), and Ofsted found that tier-of-entry decisions are in practice taken by the end of Year 9. KS3 is where those foundations are laid — long before the decisions in our GCSE options guide come around.
Year 7 Maths Tests: Baselines & CATs
There are no national tests in Year 7— nothing like SATs. What most children meet instead, usually in the first half-term, is a mix of the school's own assessments.
The best known are CATs— most commonly GL Assessment's CAT4. These are reasoning tests, not maths tests: four short digital batteries covering verbal, non-verbal, quantitative and spatial reasoning. Year 7 pupils sit Level D, and GL advises schools that results are most accurate when taken between September and November. Schools use them to benchmark the new intake, spot the gap between potential and current performance, inform setting and generate indicative GCSE projections.
Alongside or instead of CATs, many schools run a subject baselinein maths — a commercial test or an in-house paper — plus routine topic tests through the year and an end-of-year exam. Practice varies widely, so it's worth simply asking the school what it uses and when.
Setting: How Maths Classes Are Grouped
Maths is the subject most likely to be taught in ability sets. Ofsted's 2023 maths report found that almost all schools it visited grouped classes by current attainment at some stage — and in maths that often starts in Year 7, using KS2 results, CATs and baseline tests. Some schools set from the first half-term; others wait until later in the year.
It's worth knowing that setting is imperfect. A 2019 study of 9,301 Year 7 students across 46 English secondaries found 31.2% had been placed in a lower or higher maths set than their KS2 results warranted. And the wider evidence is genuinely mixed: the EEF's toolkit puts the average impact of setting at roughly zero months of extra progress, with lower-attaining pupils tending to do worse — while a new UCL/EEF study published in April 2026 found higher-attaining pupils made about two months' less progress in mixed-attainment classes than in sets, with no measurable harm to lower-attaining pupils from mixing. Schools weigh that evidence differently, and both approaches are defensible.
The practical takeaway for parents: don't panic about the September set, and don't treat it as a verdict. Ask two questions at the first parents' evening — how does the school decide sets, and when are they reviewed? Then raise any concerns early. Ofsted warns that decisions harden across KS3: GCSE tier-of-entry choices were, in practice, being taken by the end of Year 9.
The “Year 7 Dip” — and Why Bright Kids Coast
This is the part of the guide I most want parents to read. The Education Endowment Foundation is blunt about it: “There is a large dip in mathematical attainment and attitudes towards maths as children move from primary to secondary school in England.” In the research behind that line, pupils tested on primary numeracy a full year after transition performed below their level at the end of Year 6.
Why? Part of it is structural. Ofsted's 2015 report — pointedly titled Key stage 3: the wasted years?— found one in five secondary inspections flagging KS3 as a weakness, and 85% of school leaders admitting they staffed GCSE and A-level classes first. Its 2023 maths report adds that pupils who fall behind are often rushed on to “complete the course” without securely learning what came before — then end up repeating KS3 content in Year 10.
And part of it is the coasting trap. Because Year 7 typically opens by consolidating KS2 content, confident children can spend the autumn thinking “we did this in primary”— and quietly stop trying. Work habits slacken while the material is familiar; then formal algebra lands and the gears grind. The attitude dip the EEF documents matters just as much as the attainment dip: a child who decides in Year 7 that they're “not a maths person” carries that story into GCSE.
Sparx, MathsWatch & Co: the Homework Platforms
Year 7 maths homework almost certainly lives online now, and within a fortnight of September you'll be hearing one of these names at the dinner table:
- Sparx Maths— the biggest player, used by over 2.2 million students. Homework is adaptive: questions are personalised to each child's level, with help videos attached. (If you remember HegartyMaths — it was folded into Sparx in 2023.)
- MathsWatch — clear video explanations paired with exam-style practice, with teachers tracking progress behind the scenes.
- Dr Frost Maths — a non-profit built by UK teacher Dr Jamie Frost, and completely free: video lessons, skill practice and a homework platform.
- MyMaths— Oxford University Press's subscription service, with ready-made lessons, randomised homework questions and revision activities from KS2 to A-level.
For parents, the platform is less a chore-tracker than a window into gaps. A topic that keeps coming back wrong is telling you something a termly report won't. Encourage your child to watch the help video before asking for rescue, and resist doing the questions for them — the software is usually adapting to what it thinks your child can do.
How to Help with Year 7 Maths at Home
You don't need to reteach simultaneous equations at the kitchen table. The evidence points at five habits — most of them ten-minute habits — that genuinely move the needle:

Keep number facts fluent.
Ofsted's 2023 report found that weak recall of number facts — times tables above all — hampers progress well into secondary school. Five minutes of quick-fire tables or number bonds a few times a week protects everything built on top of them.

Swap re-reading for self-quizzing.
Retrieval practice — closing the book and recalling from memory — is one of the best-supported findings in learning science, with strong effects in secondary-age studies. Little and often beats a long Sunday session every time.

Watch your maths language.
A study in Psychological Science found that children of maths-anxious parents learned significantly less maths over a school year — but only when those parents frequently helped with homework. (It studied young children in the US, but the mechanism is sobering.) If maths makes you anxious, stay positive or step back — never announce 'I was never good at maths'.

Stay engaged — lightly.
The EEF puts parental engagement at around four months of additional progress on average, though the effect is smaller at secondary age. Quality beats hours: ask what they're studying, get them to teach you something, show interest in the platform scores. Hovering over every homework helps nobody.

Go to the school early.
If something isn't clicking, email the class teacher or head of maths in the autumn, not at the summer parents' evening. Sets are reviewed after assessments, help can be arranged, and every teacher would rather hear in October than in March.

- Dr Frost Maths — entirely free videos and skill practice; students can register themselves and practise independently.
- White Rose Education— the small-steps KS3 schemes many schools follow, with supporting materials on its website (check the site for what's currently free for parents).
The pattern that works: ten minutes, three or four times a week, matched to whatever topic school is on. A weekend blitz the night before a topic test does far less.
When a Year 7 Maths Tutor Is Worth It
Most Year 7s settle without extra help, and I'd never add pressure where none is needed. But there are three situations where one-to-one support earns its keep: when the transition dip lingers past the first term and confidence starts to harden into “I'm rubbish at maths”; when a specific KS2 gap — fractions, times tables, place value — keeps tripping up new content; and when a bright child is coasting and needs stretching before boredom becomes a habit.
The evidence here is strong: the Education Endowment Foundation rates one-to-one tuition at around +5 months of additional progress on average, with short, regular sessions aligned to classroom teaching working best.
