
Here's what a decade of GCSE Maths tutoring in Oxford has taught me: most students don't have a maths problem — they have a revision problem. They re-read their notes, highlight the textbook, watch a few videos, feel productive… and their grade barely moves.
Maths is different from every other GCSE. You can't revise it by reading, because the exam doesn't test what you can recognise — it tests what you can do, under time pressure, without prompts. One of my students went from teacher-predicted grade 3s to grade 8s; what changed wasn't his intelligence, it was his system.
This guide is that system: what the exam actually looks like, what the grade boundaries really require, and a week-by-week plan for the 2026/27 year built on the two revision techniques the research consistently supports.
Know the Exam First: How Many Papers, Which Tiers, What Dates
You can't plan a campaign without knowing the battlefield. GCSE Maths is three written papers, all sat in the same summer series:

That's the Edexcel and AQA structure — 240 marks in total. OCR also sets three 90-minute papers but marks each out of 100 and positions its non-calculator paper differently, so check which board your school uses (it's printed on every past paper your teacher hands out).
Everyone sits either Foundation tier (grades 1–5) or Higher tier (grades 4–9). Grade 4 is the official “standard pass”; grade 5 is the “strong pass”. The tiers also weight content differently — Foundation leans harder on number work, Higher is roughly 30% algebra — which matters for where you spend your revision hours.
For the class of 2027: the three papers fall between mid-May and mid-June 2027 (Paper 1 provisionally on Friday 14 May 2027 — confirm against the final JCQ timetable your school publishes). That means roughly 40 teaching weeks from September — fewer than most Year 11s think, once mocks, holidays and other subjects take their share.
What the Grade Boundaries Really Mean
Grade boundaries are the most misunderstood numbers in GCSE Maths — and understanding them changes how you revise. Here are the real June 2025 Edexcel boundaries (out of 240):

What should you actually do with this?
- You don't need to answer everything. A grade 5 on Higher needed about 36% in June 2025. Being reliably right on the topics you know beats attempting everything badly.
- Grades 4–5 are won on the routine questions. Around half the marks reward standard techniques — the first two-thirds of each paper. Master those before touching the hard stuff at the back.
- Grades 8–9 are won at the back of the paper. A 9 needed roughly 90% in June 2025 — near-perfection on routine work plus genuine problem-solving. Nationally, just 3.2% of maths entries achieved a 9 in 2025.
For context: 71.9% of 16-year-olds in England achieved grade 4+ in maths in summer 2025, and 16.5% of all entries reached grade 7 or above. A good grade in maths is absolutely achievable — with the right method.
The Revision Method That Works (and the One That Doesn't)
The research here is unusually clear. A landmark review by Dunlosky and colleagues rated ten popular study techniques: practice testing (retrieval) and spaced practice came out on top, while re-reading, highlighting and summarising rated among the least effective. The Education Endowment Foundation's review of cognitive science reaches the same conclusion for classrooms (while noting, fairly, that real-classroom evidence is thinner than lab evidence).
Translated into GCSE Maths terms:
- Weak revision: re-reading notes, copying out formulas, watching videos passively, re-doing questions you already get right.
- Strong revision: attempting questions cold, marking them yourself against the mark scheme, keeping an error log, and re-testing the same topic a week later — then a month later.
The single most powerful tool is the error log: a notebook where every lost mark gets one line — the question, the topic, and why the mark went (didn't know it, slipped up, or misread it). Your error log becomes a personalised syllabus of exactly what to revise next. Nothing generic beats it.
The Week-by-Week Plan (September to Exam Day)
Here's the structure I use with my Year 11 students, answering the question I'm asked most: “when should we start revising?” — from September, gently; from January, seriously.
Close the gaps while school teaches the last topics
Work topic-by-topic, not paper-by-paper. Each week: pick two topics (one weak, one medium), do 30–40 minutes of questions on each, mark them honestly, log the errors. Prioritise number and ratio on Foundation, algebra on Higher — they carry the most marks. Mental arithmetic practice twice a week starts paying into Paper 1 now.
Mocks — and your first real data
Your mock papers are gold: they tell you your real working grade and exactly which topics leak marks. Rebuild your revision list from the mock mark-scheme review, not from vibes. From January, add one past paper a fortnight, done in full and timed.
One timed past paper a week
Alternate calculator and non-calculator papers. The routine is fixed: sit it timed, mark it same day, log every lost mark, then spend the next two sessions re-practising those exact topics. With well over 40 real papers per tier per board freely available, you will not run out.
Sharpen, don't cram
Two papers a week, plus short daily retrieval bursts (10 quick questions from your error log). Rehearse the exam itself: formula recall, calculator efficiency, showing working for method marks. The final week before Paper 1 is for consolidating banked topics — never for meeting new ones.
Paper-by-Paper Tactics
Paper 1 (non-calculator): this paper punishes rusty arithmetic. Times tables, fraction operations, percentages of amounts, written multiplication and division — drill them until they're automatic, because every arithmetic slip costs accuracy marks on work you understood. Examiner reports flag the same lost marks every single year: arithmetic slips and unshown working.
Papers 2 and 3 (calculator): know your calculator like an instrument — fractions, powers and roots, brackets, the ANS key, and (on Higher) solving with tables. Write down more decimal places than you need, round only at the end, and always sanity-check whether the answer is plausible.
On every paper: show your working — method marks are real marks, and a wrong answer with visible correct method often scores most of the question. Read the question twice (underline what it actually asks), attempt everything you recognise before wrestling the hard ones, and use the mark allocation as a time budget: roughly a mark a minute.
Five Revision Mistakes I See Every Year

Revising by reading.
Notes and videos feel safe because they never expose what you can't do. Maths marks come from doing — every session must involve answering questions.

Only practising topics you like.
Comfortable revision is usually pointless revision. Your error log — not your mood — decides what tonight's session covers.

Doing past papers without marking them properly.
The paper is 30% of the value; the mark-scheme review is the other 70%. Unmarked papers teach nothing.

No timed practice until May.
Exam timing is a skill. Students who first meet time pressure in the real exam lose marks they knew — practise the clock from January.

Cramming the night before.
Spaced beats massed practice in study after study. Ten weeks of 3 focused hours outperforms a frantic 30-hour final week — and feels calmer, too.
Foundation or Higher? The Borderline Decision
For students sitting between grades 3 and 5, tier choice is a genuinely strategic decision, usually finalised after the mocks. The trade-off: Foundation caps you at grade 5 but asks friendlier questions (a 4 needed about 60% in June 2025); Higher opens grades up to 9 and needed only ~22% for a 4 — but the questions are harder throughout, and a bad day on Higher can drop below the safety net (only a narrow-miss “allowed grade 3” exists below the 4 boundary).
My honest rule: if the goal is securing the grade 4–5 pass, Foundation is usually the calmer, safer route. If sixth-form maths is the ambition, you need Higher — a grade 6+ (often 7) is the typical entry requirement for A-Level Maths. This is exactly the conversation to have with the teacher after mocks, with real paper scores on the table.
When a Tutor Makes the Difference
Plenty of students execute this plan solo. But there are three situations where one-to-one help earns its keep:
- Foundations are shaky. If Year 7–9 gaps (fractions, negatives, basic algebra) are undermining everything built on top, self-directed revision keeps hitting the same wall. Those gaps need diagnosing and fixing in order.
- The mock says 3 and the deadline says May. Remember the resit maths: only 23.2% of November 2025 maths resit entries achieved a grade 4 — and under current funding rules, students without a 4 must carry on studying maths post-16. Getting it right in Year 11 is by far the easier path.
- Chasing a 7–9 for A-Level. The back-of-paper problem-solving questions respond fastest to guided practice — someone showing you the entry point into unfamiliar multi-step problems.
The evidence backs this up: the Education Endowment Foundation's toolkit puts one-to-one tuition at around +5 months of additional progress on average, with short, regular sessions aligned to classwork showing the strongest effects.
