
Somewhere in Year 9, a form comes home from school and a familiar worry begins: should my child do combined science or triple science? Parents fret that combined might “hold them back”, or that triple is only for future doctors. Ten years of tutoring science across Oxford has taught me that the honest answer is far calmer than the anxiety around it.
Both routes cover Biology, Chemistry and Physics. Both keep the door to A-level science open. The real question isn't “which is better?” — it's which is right for this particular student, given their strengths, their workload and where they might be heading.
This guide clears up exactly what differs between the two, what each means for A-levels and university, who genuinely benefits from triple — and how to revise either one well.
The Real Difference, Explained Simply
Strip away the jargon and it comes down to how many GCSEs your child earns from science, and how much detail they study.
Combined Science (also called “double science”, or “Trilogy” on AQA) is worth two GCSEs. Students still study all three sciences, but the content is streamlined, and they receive a single paired grade — like 7-6 — that counts twice on their results slip.
Triple Science(the “separate sciences”) is worth three GCSEs — a separate grade in Biology, Chemistry and Physics. It covers the same core as Combined, plus additional topics in each subject, and is examined in more depth.
A useful way to picture it: triple isn't a different subject, it's the same three sciences with the volume turned up. Everyone learns photosynthesis, the reactivity series and forces — triple students simply go further into each.
Exam Structure: Papers, Marks & Grades
Here's the side-by-side, using AQA (the most common board — the picture is very similar on Edexcel and OCR):

Both routes are six papers— two Biology, two Chemistry, two Physics. On AQA, Combined papers run 1 hour 15 minutes at 70 marks each (420 marks in total); triple papers run 1 hour 45 minutes at 100 marks each. Same number of exams, then — triple's are longer and reach further.
Both are also tiered. Foundation tier tops out at grade 5 (5-5 in Combined); Higher tier reaches grade 9 — graded 4 to 9 for the separate sciences, and on the paired 4-4 up to 9-9 scale for Combined. Every science paper must be sat in the same tier, so tier choice is a whole-science decision usually settled after the Year 11 mocks.
Is Triple Science “Harder”?
This is the question I'm asked most, and the honest answer is: it's more, rather than harder. For any given grade, the questions are pitched at the same standard whether a student is doing Combined or Triple. What changes is the volume of content to learn and the length of the papers.
That distinction matters for the decision. Triple asks for more memory, more consistency and a bit more pace. For a confident, well-organised scientist, that extra depth is genuinely enjoyable and rewarding. For a student who finds the core content a stretch, adding more of it rarely helps — doing Combined thoroughly, and coming away with two strong grades, is the wiser play.
What Each Means for A-levels & University
Here is the single most important myth to bust: very few sixth forms actually require triple science to study an A-level science. What they require is a good grade in the relevant subject — commonly a 6 or 7 in that science, and often a solid maths grade alongside.
For a triple student that's straightforward: a grade 7 in Chemistry meets a “grade 7 in Chemistry” requirement. For a Combined student, most colleges map the paired grade across, typically asking for something like a 6-6 or 7-7 for entry to A-level sciences. In other words, a strong Combined student is not shut out of A-level Biology, Chemistry or Physics.
Where triple genuinely helps is the transition: triple students have already met some of the ideas that Combined students first see at A-level, so the step up can feel a little gentler. That's an advantage, not a prerequisite — plenty of successful A-level scientists and medics came through Combined Science.
So Who Should Take Triple?
Only about 30% of students take triple science, and it's often set-based rather than a free choice. Here's how I'd frame the decision with a family:
- Triple makes sense if your child genuinely enjoys science, is a confident and consistent learner (usually in a higher set), and is leaning towards a science-heavy future — medicine, dentistry, engineering, or the physical sciences. The extra depth suits them and the workload won't overwhelm their other subjects.
- Combined is the right call if your child is a capable but not science-obsessed student, is heading towards humanities, arts, business or social sciences, or would have to sacrifice a subject they love (or need) to fit triple in. Combined keeps science doors open without dominating the timetable.
- Don't choose triple for the wrong reasons: because a friend is, because it “looks better”, or out of a vague fear of missing out. If triple would come at the cost of grades or a subject that matters more, it isn't worth it.
How to Revise GCSE Science (Either Route)
Science combines a large body of facts with the skill of applying them to unfamiliar situations — so revision has to do both. The research on effective study is clear here: retrieval practice and spaced practice beat re-reading and highlighting every time.
- Test, don't re-read. Flashcards, self-quizzing and past-paper questions force the recall the exam demands. Re-reading the textbook feels productive but rarely sticks.
- Master the required practicals. A reliable chunk of marks comes from the set practicals — methods, variables, results and evaluation. Know them cold.
- Learn the command words. “Describe”, “explain”, “evaluate” and “compare” each want a different answer. Marks are lost every year to students who know the science but answer the wrong question.
- Don't neglect the maths in science. Physics especially rewards confident rearranging of formulae, units and significant figures — often the same skills students are shoring up in GCSE Maths revision.
Mistakes Families Make With This Decision

Treating triple as automatically 'better'.
It's better for some students and a burden for others. The right choice depends on the child's strengths and goals, not on prestige.

Believing combined closes off science A-levels.
It doesn't. Sixth forms ask for a grade in the science, not for triple. A strong Combined result keeps A-level Biology, Chemistry and Physics on the table.

Letting triple crowd out a subject that matters more.
If fitting triple in means dropping a language, a creative subject or a humanity the student needs, weigh that trade-off honestly.

Leaving the tier decision too late.
Foundation caps science at grade 5. For borderline students, the Higher-or-Foundation call should be made deliberately with mock data — not by drift.
