
“My son's doing OCR but his cousin's on AQA — is one of them harder?” I get some version of this question most terms, and it comes from a completely reasonable place. Parents see three different logos on three different past papers and assume the choice must matter enormously. So let me give you the honest answer up front: the exam board matters far less than most families fear, and in a different way than they expect.
I tutor Maths and Science across all three major English boards — AQA, Pearson Edexcel and OCR — every week. This guide explains what genuinely differs between them at GCSE and A-Level, what doesn't, how the differences actually affect revision, and why “which board is easiest” is the wrong question to ask.
Everything below reflects the current specifications and the position for the 2026 exams. Where a detail shifts year to year — the formula-sheet rules especially — I've flagged it clearly.
Who Chooses the Exam Board (Hint: Not You)
The first thing to clear up is that the school chooses the exam board, not the parent or the student. Each subject department picks a board and a specification, and normally keeps the entire cohort on it. So this isn't usually a decision you get to make — it's one to understand.
Why does a department pick one board over another? Rarely difficulty. The real drivers are teacher familiarity (staff who've taught a specification for years know its quirks and mark schemes inside out), the textbooks and resources already invested in, and a preference for a particular question style. A school that switched boards would be rebuilding schemes of work and resources from scratch — so once a department settles on AQA or Edexcel or OCR, it tends to stay.
The practical takeaway: find out, early, exactly which board and specification your child is following in each subject. The class teacher will tell you, and it's the single most useful thing to know before buying a revision guide or booking a tutor — because a workbook for the wrong board wastes everyone's time.
What Actually Differs — and What Doesn't
Here's the reassuring headline: the three boards share roughly 90% of their content. That's not an accident. Every GCSE and A-Level specification in England must cover the same national subject content, published by the Department for Education, and it's the same document whichever board you sit. The core maths, the core science, the topics your child must learn — those are essentially board-agnostic.
So what genuinely differs? Four things, and they're all about packaging rather than substance:
None of that changes what a student needs to understand. It changes how the understanding is tested — which is exactly why a tutor teaches the concept the same way for any board, then drills exam technique for the specific one.
- Paper structure: how many papers, how long, and how the content is split across them.
- Question wording & command words: 'state', 'explain', 'evaluate' are used and weighted differently, and each board has house habits in how it phrases things.
- Mark-scheme style: how marks are awarded — method marks, points-based schemes, levels-of-response essays — varies, so exam technique is board-specific.
- Optional variants (science): in the sciences, boards offer concept-led and context-led routes, and the school picks which one.
Maths: How AQA, Edexcel and OCR Compare
At GCSE Maths, all three boards look almost identical on paper: three papers of 1 hour 30 minutes each, equally weighted, with one non-calculator paper and two calculator papers, tiered into Foundation (grades 1–5) and Higher (grades 4–9). Two small differences are worth knowing. First, the non-calculator paper sits first at AQA and Edexcel, but in the middle of the sequence at OCR — which changes how you'd order revision. Second, AQA and Edexcel mark each paper out of 80 (240 total) while OCR marks each out of 100 (300 total) — the same exam, a different denominator, and no effect on the grade.
At A-Level Maths, the boards again share the shape — three papers of two hours, equally weighted, no tiers — but here the meaningful difference appears: how the pure, statistics and mechanics content is split across the three papers. Edexcel puts pure maths in Papers 1 and 2 and combines Statistics and Mechanics in Paper 3. OCR pairs pure with statistics in one paper and pure with mechanics in another. AQA distributes the applied content differently again. This is the single biggest teaching consequence of the board choice — it dictates the structure of past-paper practice, so revision has to be built around the specific specification.

Science: Papers, Variants and the Practical Endorsement
Science is where the boards differ most visibly, though still not in a way that makes one 'harder'. Two structural points matter for GCSE. First, Combined Science (the double award, worth two GCSEs and reported as a paired grade from 9-9 to 1-1) is examined across six papers — two each in Biology, Chemistry and Physics — and it's tiered, so all six must be sat at the same tier. Second, the boards offer different named routes in the sciences, and the school picks one. Edexcel offers a concept-led Biology A alongside the context/storyline-led “Salters-Nuffield” SNAB route; OCR offers a Gateway suite and the context-led “Twenty First Century” suite, plus Salters chemistry and Advancing Physics. So “we do Edexcel biology” isn't the whole story — it's worth confirming which variant, because the flavour of the questions differs even if the underlying science doesn't.
The genuinely science-specific feature at A-Level is the practical endorsement. Biology, Chemistry and Physics each carry a separate result — Pass or Not Classified — reported alongside the A*–E grade on the certificate. It's assessed by teachers against the Common Practical Assessment Criteria (CPAC), which are shared across AQA, Edexcel and OCR, so the endorsement standard is genuinely uniform between boards. Students complete a minimum of 12 required practical activities (AQA calls them “Required Practicals”; OCR calls them “PAGs”). The endorsement doesn't add marks to the A*–E grade — but around 15% of the written-exam marks assess practical knowledge and data handling, so the practicals matter for the grade indirectly too. - Combined Science: six papers (two per science), tiered, all sat at the same tier; a double grade worth two GCSEs.
- Separate (triple) science: three individual GCSEs in Biology, Chemistry and Physics.
- Board variants: Edexcel SNAB biology, OCR Twenty First Century and Salters routes — concept-led vs context-led; the school chooses.
- A-Level endorsement: a separate Pass / Not Classified against shared CPAC criteria; 12+ required practicals; doesn't change the A*–E grade but underpins ~15% of written marks.
Formula Sheets and Data Booklets (Check the Year)
This is the most time-sensitive point in the whole guide, so read it with a date in mind. For the 2025, 2026 and 2027 exams, a formulae sheet is provided in GCSE Maths and an equation sheet in GCSE Physics and Combined Science — students do not have to memorise them in the exam. This applies across all three boards, because it's an Ofqual/DfE-wide arrangement.
Two crucial caveats. First, this is explicitly a temporary measure, introduced after the pandemic and scheduled to end after 2027, with reformed arrangements from 2028 under consultation — so it is exactly the kind of rule to re-check each year rather than assume. Second, even now the maths sheet only provides some formulae (the quadratic formula, the sine and cosine rules at Higher, and a handful of others); over twenty formulae are still not on it and must be known. Don't let a student assume the sheet does the remembering for them.
At A-Level, the sciences supply data booklets and periodic tables in the exam as standard on every board — but their contents differ. Edexcel's chemistry booklet, for example, includes a standard electrode potential table that AQA's does not, so an AQA student needs those values from memory or the question. It's another reason revision has to be built around the specific board's materials, not a generic set.
The 'Which Board Is Easiest' Myth
Every year, a rumour goes round that one board is the soft option. It isn't true in any durable sense, and it's worth understanding why. England runs on Ofqual's “comparable outcomes” approach: a grade 7, or an A, is designed to represent the same standard across all three boards, and grade boundaries are adjusted every year to hold that line. If one board's paper turns out harder in a given summer, its boundaries drop; if it's easier, they rise. A board that looks “easier” on the page is compensated by higher boundaries. What is true is that raw-mark thresholds differ from board to board and year to year — a grade 7 might be 65% on one paper and 68% on another — but that reflects paper difficulty, not a softer grade. It nets out. Chasing the “easy” board is a false economy.
The honest nuance to offer instead is fit, not difficulty. A student who thrives on structured short-answer questions may suit a board that leans that way; one who writes strong extended answers may suit AQA A-Level Biology, with its 25-mark essay, over a board that uses more multiple-choice. But that's about playing to a student's strengths — and in any case the school has already chosen — not about one board being a shortcut to a better grade.
So, Does the Exam Board Matter? Honestly
Here's my honest, decade-of-tutoring answer: the exam board matters for how your child revises, and barely at all for what their grade is worth. The content is largely shared, the standard is held level across boards by design, and no board is a genuine shortcut. What changes is the packaging — paper structure, question style, mark schemes, and the science variant — and that packaging is exactly what focused exam preparation is for.
That's how I approach it in one-to-one lessons: teach the maths or the science properly and board-agnostically first, so the understanding is real and transferable, then drill the specific specification — its past papers, its command words, its mark scheme — so nothing on the day is a surprise. The concept work would be the same whichever board; the exam technique is tailored to the one your child actually sits.
So the most useful thing you can do isn't to worry about which board your child was given — it's to find out precisely which specification it is, and make sure their revision and any tutoring are built around that.
