
Choosing A-levels is the first decision that genuinely matters for university — and the volume of advice around it can make it feel more complicated than it is. Which A-levels should I choose? How many? Do I need to pick the right subjects, or just the subjects I'm good at? The honest answer is: both, and in most cases they're the same thing.
With GCSE results arriving in August 2026 and sixth-form choices following fast, this is the guide I give the Year 11 families I tutor in Oxford: the clear-headed version, with the real university requirements, the subjects worth thinking twice about, and a simple framework for deciding. No bluster, no outdated lists — just what actually opens doors.

How Many A-Levels Should I Take?
The answer is three — and that answer has not changed. UCAS and all major universities base conditional offers on three A-level subjects. Oxford and Cambridge have both stated clearly that they do not prefer four A-levels; three grades of A*A*A* are more impressive than four grades where one is weaker. No British university requires more than three subjects as a condition of entry.
Taking four full A-levels is generally unnecessary and carries real risk. Four subjects means four sets of papers, four revision programmes, and a workload that regularly causes grades to drop across the board. The families I tutor who try to manage four subjects in Year 12 often end up doing none of them as well as they could have done three.
The Further Maths Question
Further Maths is the most misunderstood qualification in the sixth-form prospectus. It is simultaneously over-recommended (to students who don't need it) and under-recommended (to students who do). Here is the precise picture.
When Further Maths is worth taking: For students targeting Mathematics, Engineering, Physics or Computer Science at Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial, Warwick or LSE, Further Maths is strongly recommended — and at some of those institutions it is now formally required. Cambridge Mathematics explicitly requires Mathematics and Further Mathematics at A*/7. At Cambridge Engineering, 96%of recent entrants had studied Further Maths, and from the 2025 admissions cycle, five Cambridge colleges — Christ's, Churchill, Clare, Lucy Cavendish and Sidney Sussex — now mandate Further Maths as a requirement for Engineering applicants. At Oxford, Further Maths is not formally required for Engineering but is strongly encouraged wherever the school offers it.
LSE Economics offers an interesting case: an A* in Further Maths combined with an A in regular Maths is an acceptable alternative to the usual A* in Maths requirement. And Cambridge Computer Science now requires Further Mathematics at AS or A level if the school offers it.
When Further Maths is not worth taking: If you are not targeting the programmes above, Further Maths adds very little and the time is better spent achieving top grades in three well-chosen subjects. A student aiming for Economics at Bristol, Law at Edinburgh, or Medicine at Sheffield will not benefit from Further Maths — their offers are based on three A-levels in subjects relevant to their chosen course.
The “Facilitating Subjects” Myth — and What Replaced It
For years, parents and students were told that choosing from the Russell Group's list of “facilitating subjects” — Maths, Further Maths, Sciences, English Literature, History, Languages, Geography — was essential for university. On 23 May 2019, the Russell Group retired that list. The reason, in their own words: students had wrongly concluded that these were the only acceptable subjects, which was never the intention. “This has never been the case,” the Russell Group stated at the time.
The list was replaced by the Informed Choices website (informedchoices.ac.uk), which gives degree-specific rather than blanket advice. You can enter a combination of A-level subjects and see which degrees they open up, or start from a target degree and find out which subjects are essential or useful.
This matters because it removes the anxiety that a student who loves Art, Film Studies or Music is somehow choosing “wrong”. Degree requirements are what they are, and the Informed Choices tool maps them honestly. What it cannot do is help a student who has not yet used it — so use it.
What Each Degree Actually Requires at A-Level
Entry requirements are set by individual universities, not centrally — so always check the specific course page for every institution on your list. The table below captures the most common requirements across Russell Group programmes as of the 2026/27 admissions cycle. It is a guide, not a substitute for the official course page.

A few entries in this table deserve a note. For medicine, Chemistry is required at the vast majority of schools — around 15 institutions including Imperial, King's, UCL, Bristol and Cardiff require both Chemistry and Biology. Oxford requires Chemistry plus at least one of Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics (offer A*AA). Cambridge requires Chemistry plus at least two other science or mathematics subjects — Biology, Physics, Mathematics or Further Mathematics — with a standard offer of A*A*A. Liverpool requires Chemistry plus one of Biology, Physics, or Mathematics (offer AAA). A small number of schools — including Bangor and Southampton — accept Biology without Chemistry; Southampton requires Biology plus one additional science (which may be Chemistry, Physics, Psychology, Sociology, Environmental Studies or Geography), while Bangor requires Biology plus one of Chemistry, Physics, or Mathematics/Further Maths/Statistics. Always build a medicine shortlist and check every school individually, as requirements change annually.
For law, there is no required A-level at any UK university — including Oxford and Cambridge. Admissions tutors are looking for evidence of sustained argument, close reading and intellectual breadth, which is why essay-based subjects (History, English Literature, Politics) are often valued, but a student who takes Maths, Further Maths and Physics is not disadvantaged for law any more than one who takes History and English.
What GCSE Grades Do You Need to Take Each A-Level?
The first gate is not the university — it is the sixth form. Before you can choose which A-levels you want, you need to know which ones your GCSE grades will allow you to study. Entry requirements vary between schools and colleges, but these are the typical patterns I see across the Oxford sixth forms I work with:
- General sixth-form entry: Most sixth forms require a minimum of five GCSEs at grade 4 or above, including English Language and Mathematics. More selective sixth forms ask for grade 5 or 6 across the board.
- A-level Mathematics: Most schools require GCSE Maths at grade 6 or 7. If you are aiming for A-level Maths, a grade 6 is the minimum at many schools and a 7 is required at the more selective ones. A grade 5 will not get you onto the course at most sixth forms.
- A-level Sciences: Most schools require a minimum of grade 6 in the relevant GCSE science, or a 6-6 profile in Combined Science. Some require a 7 for Chemistry or Physics specifically. Students in Combined Science should check carefully whether their sixth form's science A-level entry requirements specify grades from Triple Science.
- Other A-level subjects: A grade 5 or 6 in the relevant GCSE is typical. Many schools also expect students to have studied the GCSE equivalent — a new A-level subject with no GCSE background is possible but requires extra motivation in Year 12.
These are typical patterns only. Every school sets its own thresholds, and some are stricter than others. If your results on 20 August are close to the boundary for a subject you want, contact the sixth form directly — they often have discretion, particularly for students who narrowly missed a target grade.
Subject Combinations to Think Twice About
There is no single “wrong” A-level combination, but there are a few that routinely close doors without students realising it, and a few that signal something problematic to selective admissions tutors. Here is what I tell the families I work with:

Business Studies + Economics together.
This is the single most commonly cited combination to avoid. LSE explicitly states that the combination of Business Studies and Economics as two separate A-levels is best avoided: the subjects cover overlapping material, and selective universities may effectively count them as one rather than two. Choose one or the other — not both.

Three 'applied' or vocational subjects.
A combination such as Business Studies, Media Studies and Travel & Tourism is considered very narrow by selective universities, and may effectively close the door to competitive courses at Russell Group institutions before your application is even read.

General Studies, Critical Thinking or ICT as qualifying subjects.
Oxford, Cambridge, Imperial and LSE explicitly do not accept these subjects as counting towards their offers. They are sometimes offered in schools as 'easy wins', but they carry no weight at the universities most students are targeting.
- 4
All three subjects in the same essay or applied cluster.
Three essay-based humanities (History, English Literature, Sociology) are not 'soft' in the way vocational clusters are, but they do close off all science, engineering, maths and most economics routes entirely. If a student is certain about humanities degrees, that's fine — but if they're unsure, including at least one numerate or science subject keeps more options open.
By contrast, the combinations that consistently keep the most doors open are: Maths + Physics + Chemistry (covers Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Medicine, Pharmacy and Veterinary); Maths + Chemistry + Biology (covers Medicine, Dentistry, Veterinary, Biology, Biomedical Sciences); and Maths + any two humanities (covers Economics, Social Sciences, Law and keeps STEM options partially open). None of these are magic — they work because they demonstrate breadth and match the requirements of multiple competitive degree programmes.
The GCSE-to-A-Level Jump — Why Strong Students Still Struggle
One of the most important things a Year 11 student can know before choosing A-levels is this: the difficulty increase from GCSE to A-level is significantly larger than most people expect, and it catches capable students off guard every year. This is not a reason to choose easier subjects — it is a reason to choose subjects you genuinely enjoy and are motivated by, because motivation is what carries you through the harder stretches.
Some concrete numbers illustrate the scale. A-level Maths involves approximately 360 hours of content over two years — more than twice the roughly 150 hours of GCSE Maths. The expected independent study time at A-level is around 9-13 hours per week per subject once lessons and homework are included, compared to 4-6 hours at GCSE. Students choosing three A-levels are potentially managing 30+ hours of study per week in Year 12 before any exam pressure begins.
The grade statistics confirm the jump. In summer 2025, A*/A rates at A-level were: Mathematics around 42%; Chemistry 32%; Physics 31.9%; Biology 27.6%; English Literature 24.6%. These are students who have already passed their GCSEs — a filtered, motivated cohort — yet fewer than a third achieve the top two grades in the hard sciences. A student who found GCSE Chemistry straightforward should expect A-level Chemistry to be a genuinely different challenge.
Alternatives: T Levels, BTECs & Apprenticeships
A-levels are not the only respected route into higher education or skilled employment. For some students, an alternative qualification is the genuinely better fit — not a fallback, but a positive choice.
T Levels
T Levels are two-year Level 3 technical qualifications introduced from September 2020, combining roughly 80% classroom learning with a mandatory industry placement of at least 315 hours (around 45 days). They carry UCAS points: a Distinction* is worth 168 points — equivalent to three A*s. As of the 2025/26 academic year, 21 T Level pathways are available, covering areas from Digital Production and Engineering to Health, Education, Finance, Legal Services, Science and Agriculture. A new Marketing T Level was added from September 2025.
Most Russell Group universities now accept T Levels for relevant courses, though acceptance varies significantly by institution and by the specific course. Medicine, veterinary science and many science courses still require specific A-levels. If T Levels are on your list, verify acceptance directly with every target university before committing — secondary sources on this are not reliable enough to act on.
BTECs
BTECs remain a widely taken alternative, available as an Extended Diploma (equivalent to three A-levels), Diploma (two A-levels) or Extended Certificate (one A-level). From September 2025, new BTEC Nationals designated as Alternative Academic Qualifications (AAQs) began replacing some legacy qualifications. Most Russell Group universities accept BTECs, though Oxford and Cambridge are unlikely to consider applications comprising only BTECs without accompanying A-levels. BTECs work best in mixed programmes alongside A-levels for competitive university entry.
Apprenticeships
Degree apprenticeships at Level 6 offer a genuine route into professional careers — engineering, law, accountancy, technology — without the tuition fee debt, combining work with university study. They are competitive and carry their own entry requirements, but for the right student they offer a structured, employer-backed path that can lead to the same qualified destination as a traditional degree.
How to Choose Which A-Levels to Take: A Four-Step Framework
When a family asks me how to make the decision, I walk them through four questions in a specific order. The order matters — answering them out of sequence often leads to the wrong outcome.
Check for any hard subject requirements first.
If you have a specific degree or career in mind, look up the actual entry requirements for the courses you are considering — not the general advice, the actual course pages. Medicine needs Chemistry. Engineering needs Maths and Physics. Economics needs Maths. Law needs nothing specific. Establish what is non-negotiable before you do anything else. If you have no clear destination, skip to step 2 and come back.
Choose subjects you are genuinely good at and motivated by.
Aptitude and interest are the two strongest predictors of A-level grade, and they usually go together. A student who is competent at a subject but finds it dull rarely achieves their potential; one who is passionate but starts from a weaker base usually surprises everyone. Be honest about which subjects energise you rather than drain you. The two-year commitment is long enough that this matters enormously.
Ask whether your combination keeps enough doors open.
Use informedchoices.ac.uk to test your shortlisted combination against a range of degree paths. If you have no fixed plan, make sure your three subjects collectively open at least a reasonable spread of options. Including Maths if you are comfortable with it is almost always a good idea — it opens more degree paths than any other single A-level, including non-STEM degrees like Economics, Psychology and Architecture.

This is the practical final check. Before your shortlist becomes a final choice, confirm with your school or sixth-form college that your GCSE grades meet their entry requirements for each subject. Do this in September after results day, not before — some thresholds have flexibility if a student narrowly missed them and the school believes they can succeed on the course.
Revisiting Choices on GCSE Results Day
A-level choices made before results day are not always the ones a student ends up with — and that is fine. GCSE results on Thursday 20 August sometimes differ from teacher predictions, in both directions. Here is what can and cannot be changed on the day itself.
If your results are better than expected: Contact the sixth form that morning. Many will accommodate a change of course if places are available, and a student who has exceeded predictions for Maths may be welcomed onto a course they were previously borderline for. There is no formal system for this — it is handled school by school, which is why it is worth calling rather than emailing.
If your results are lower than expected: Check your sixth-form offer conditions against the actual results, not against what you hoped for. If you have missed a specific grade requirement, speak to the admissions team directly — many will still admit near-misses, particularly in subjects where the school has good teaching and the student is otherwise well-placed. A change of subject combination on the day is also possible if one subject result is disappointing; the key is to have that conversation immediately rather than waiting.
